We joyfully celebrate the life of Tom Miyasaki, whose 101 years were defined by courage, devotion, and unwavering pride in his roots. A cherished member of the Altadena community since 2014, he passed peacefully at home on January 19, 2026. Born in 1924 to Issei parents, Tom was a proud “Riversider,” raised in Sacramento’s close-knit Japanese American farming community. His early years were marked by the injustice of incarceration at Tule Lake and Amache during World War II, yet he met those challenges with resilience and resolve. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army in occupied Japan and later devoted his career to public service in the U.S. Civil Service. After retiring in 1984, he returned with his family to California, choosing to spend his remaining years in the state of his birth. His life was a testament to perseverance, loyalty, and enduring love of family, community, and country.
He is predeceased by his wife, Tsuru Miyasaki; son, Ken Miyasaki; sister, Sachiju Yokogawa; brother, Sam Miyasaki; and is survived by his children, June Miyasaki, Mark (Liza) Miyasaki; grandchildren, Justin Miyasaki, Marisa (Michael) Johnson; three great grandchildren; also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A graveside burial service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 10:00AM at Mountain View Cemetery, 2400 N. Fair Oaks Ave. Altadena, followed by a memorial service at 11:30AM at First Presbyterian Church Altadena, 2775 Lincoln Ave., Altadena, with Rev. Dr. Mariko Yanagihara officiating. In lieu of koden, the family requests a donation of your choice to First Presbyterian Church Altadena, Pasadena Japanese Cultural Institute, Little Tokyo Service Center, or the JACL to honor Tom’s legacy.
